Synopsis
Good afternoon, Caribbean surf compadres! Today is Thursday, August 26th, and welcome to another edition of your Surf Caribe surf synopsis. I’m Dr. Steepwater, your friendly neighborhood surf forecaster, and I’m coming to you straight from YOUR connection to the CORE of Caribbean surf culture.
OK, so I know it’s been a while since you’ve heard from me, but when summer comes I head to an undisclosed Southern hemisphere destination for some off-season surf. But, now I’m back here in the Caribbean and it’s time to fasten your seatbelts because things here are about to blow up big time!
Right now we’ve got Danielle moving into our window from the NE and she’ll be pushing in a fairly long period ENE swell starting this afternoon, peaking tomorrow, and hanging on through Saturday. Today we have a high tide at 9:28 AM, and a low tide at 3:44 PM. The wind will be a bit brisk today from the ENE/NE, but should definitely be backing off tomorrow and becoming more favorable in direction as Danielle begins to affect the local weather.
Tomorrow is when things should really start beginning to fall into place with longer period swell in the 6’ range and more NE direction as well as lighter winds. These winds will likely be variable, but this shouldn’t be problematic. Look for head-high to overhead waves at places that can handle a fairly E swell direction.
As we head into the weekend Saturday is also looking very promising as the swell continues to rotate more towards the north as Danielle retreats into the central Atlantic and the winds drop off a little bit more.
Mid Range: 3-5 days out
The second half of the weekend looks to have leftover on Sunday, but with Earl scheduled to be a hurricane by then the early part of next week Is almost looking better on the current models. At this time Earl is looking to pass considerably closer to the NE Caribbean than Danielle. With this in mind, and despite that meaning possibly better surf, everyone should be watching closely as these storms can change their tracks at any time and here in Puerto Rico we’re kinda overdue for a direct hit. However, if the storm stays on the current projected path we should have some solid NE swell on Monday into Tuesday.
Long Range: 6 days out
By Wednesday, a combination of swell from Earl and Danielle will very likely be pouring in some NE swell in the 8’ range and at about 12 seconds. The proximity of Earl will be probably be drawing the wind from the S so this day holds a lot of promise for some really stellar surf. By Thursday things will probably be winding down, but there is another very promising depression behind Earl so we’ll have to wait and see what happens there. Meanwhile, be sure to check out all the latest and greatest content here on Surf Caribe where you’ll find the best photos, videos, and surf-related news stories from islands all over the region!
